Metal Gear Solid

Posted in Uncategorized on March 9, 2010 by benhoefs

I did this Metal Gear Solid compilation video about a year ago in my Economy of Video Games class. I made this before I had any experience with video editing so there are some shaky cuts. I used iMovie to compile this video.

I started going to the Institute of Production and Recording in the summer of 2008. As I approach the time of finishing my career here in March, I have compiled some of the things I have worked on.

I recorded all the sound effects myself for this clip of the movie “Clockwork Orange”

I used mostly library sound effects for this clip of the movie “Perfume”

This is the first clip I did from the movie “Pi”

The Dot-Com Bubble

Posted in World Wide Web with tags , , on January 26, 2010 by benhoefs

Back in 1995, the internet was still relatively new and was on the rise. As more and more people gained access to the internet, the stock market rose due to increasing investments into dot-com companies. As these stock prices rose, more and more investors sank money into these brand new internet companies. Events show similarities to the rise and fall of the gold rush back in the mid 1800′s. With the sight of an opportunity, vast amounts of people decided to take on a venture in this new business.

Like the Gold Rush though, the dot-com bubble eventually burst. As the stock market rose over the next couple years, the internet became saturated with over-the-night internet businesses. Share holders almost randomly invested in these companies because there were so many of them. The problem was that these new entrepreneurs made poor business decisions are spent their earnings unwisely.

Eventually it all came crashing down. It got to a point where there were too many companies for investors and consumers to choose from. This resulted in new entrepreneurs being prevented to start new companies due to lack of interest in investors and a saturated market. As these companies had a decrease in earnings and no money saved, investors began backing out and the bubble was burst.

The dot-com bubble popped in March of 2000, causing the Nasdaq Composite to lose 78 per cent of its value (falling from 5046.86 to 1114.11) and nearly $5 trillion in market value from technology companies (by the fall of 2002). Among other factors, the “dot-bomb” crash was caused by overvalued Internet start-ups without solid business plans.

Some of these greatest d0t-com failures include Psuedo.com, Webvan.com, Kibu.com, Yadayada.com, Flooz.com, Boo.com, Kozmo.com, Theglobe.com, and Pets.com

Here is a video of Jeff Bezos at a TED conference talking about the dot-com bust in relevance to the Gold Rush and the golden age of appliances:

And here’s a time-line of the rise and fall of the dot-com, leading up to the present.
